New England's Meterologist and Astronomy Friend
Todd Gross has been forecasting New England's weather for over 25 years, starting with the two blizzards of 1978, and right through his nearly 22 year tenure at Channel 7 in Boston as Chief Meteorologist. Todd includes astronomy and natural phenomena in his weathercasts and blog information. He is also a two time Emmy winner for Best Weathercaster in New England.
Todd Gross joined 7NEWS in Boston in 1984 as weekend meteorologist and science reporter. In that same year he broadened and formalized the use of weather-watchers on the air in Boston and also introduced the "sunburn index" (later out-done by the more formal UV index) to the Boston area for the first time! In 1988, Gross was promoted to meteorologist for 7NEWS "Today in New England"(5-7AM) as well as "7NEWS at Noon" weekday newscasts. He also appeared on the children's show Ready to Go, where he still remembers meeting the New Kids on the Block!
Awarded the "Best Weathercaster" EMMY for 2002 and 2004, Gross has been nominated for three other local Emmy awards over the course of his distinguished career. Gross kicked-off the very successful and popular "Weather Spotter Network" program at 7NEWS, and is an avid astronomer who is in fact a published astro-photographer.
Todd brings this expertise to his viewers by using astronomic terminology, such as the term "Indian Moon," and working them into his unique and captivating weathercasts.Gross’s innovative techniques have helped television stations stay on top of technology through this past decade. In 1994, before TV stations even began providing online forcasts, Todd brought weather to the Internet through web pages, Internet Chat, and Weather-watcher networks. Before joining 7NEWS, Gross worked briefly as a meteorologist for the Satellite News Channel in Stamford, Connecticut. Prior to SNC, he served for two years at WNYT-TV in Albany, New York, as chief meteorologist for the weeknight newscast at 6 and 11PM. He was also the founder and chief meteorologist for the nation-wide weather service, Compu-Weather, in New York City.
Gross is a member of the American Meteorological Society and was awarded the society’s Television Seal of Approval. Gross may be most well known as the character who was portrayed in 'The Perfect Storm,' after he (and other meteorologists in the area) correctly projected coastal flooding and high winds the day before Halloween in 1991.A native of New York City, he graduated from the State University of New York in Albany with a Bachelor of Science degree in atmospheric sciences. How much is he REALLY into the weather? Todd and his wife Ava named their children after the weather with middle names Sky and Sunshine!
